About This Photograph

As Shinnecock Hills' original 12-hole course grew crowded, a nine-hole ladies' course was built in 1893. It was over this course that many of golf's top female competitors learned the game. Several years later, the separate layouts were replaced by a new 18-hole course open to all members. Posed in front of the clubhouse, eight lady golfers, including 1896-1898 U.S. Women's Amateur champion Beatrix Hoyt (kneeling, far right), are dressed in typical golf attire for turn-of-the-century women.
