About This Photograph
For the first time in 90 years, the U.S. Open returned to Shinnecock Hills G.C. on the eastern end of Long Island in 1986. Although it was one of the five original clubs of the USGA, Shinnecock Hills had not hosted an Open since 1896. Greg Norman held the 54-hole lead, something he accomplished at all four majors that year (he only won the British Open), but he couldn't hold it and 43-year-old Raymond Floyd carded a final-round 66 to beat Lanny Wadkins and Chip Beck by two strokes.
