About This Photograph

Francis Ouimet, 1913 U.S. Open champion and 1914 and 1931 U.S. Amateur champion, poses in this undated photo. From age 11, Ouimet worked as a caddie at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., near Boston, literally across the street from the house he grew up in. Ouimet vaulted to golf prominence with his upset 1913 U.S. Open win in a playoff with Englishmen Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, two of the finest players of the era, on a course Ouimet knew very well: The Country Club. His win is seen as a watershed date in the history of American golf.
