About This Photograph

While ropes prevented spectators from going onto the course, they didn't stop fans from getting a better glimpse of the action. Sometimes fans just stepped up on the rope to see. In the 1929 U.S. Open, Bob Jones defeated Al Espinosa in a scheduled 36-hole playoff. Jones needed to hole a tricky 12-foot putt at the 72nd hole to secure the tie. It was the third U.S. Open title for Jones, who would retire from the game the following year after completing what would be called the "Grand Slam."
